Oli Mayne, James O’Sullivan, Noel Taylor - Thistledown (April 1, 2009)

"Thistledown" is a mix of abstract sounds and oddball melodic sparring, somewhat sweetened by the occasional song-like refrain. There is much that is jagged and spiky and unforgiving, like the coarsest of thistles, but there is also music that has a soft and ethereal delicacy, like down, ready to blow away with the slightest puff.

There are eight short improvised works. The three play together for fun, allowing themselves little ‘forbidden’ treats, such as short truncated bursts of jazz phraseology, tiny fragments of pop, and other similar ‘lapses of taste’. The result is a kind of strangulated lyricism permeated by sudden darting and abrupt changes of direction. The album makes no attempt to pursue a rigorous agenda of pushing forward the ‘boundaries of new music’, but there is a common sensibility at work, regulating the improvisational decision making process.
---
Mayne, O’Sullivan and Taylor are part of London’s vibrant free improvisation scene. They have each worked and performed with a wide variety of other musicians, including Eddie Prevost (AMM), Adam Bohman, John Bissett, Shabaka Hutchins and many others. Individually they have performed at many of the city’s leading improvisation venues, such as the Vortex, Café Oto, Battersea Arts Centre, the ‘Freedom of the city’ festival (programmed by Evan Parker amongst others), in addition to playing outside the UK in Poland and Hungary. These are their first offerings in this grouping, recorded over a number of sessions in the summer and autumn of 2008, at Goldsmiths College, London.

A - Jeff Henderson

Jeff Henderson

Audio Files VBR MP3
A 34 MB

Recorded live at the Newtown Community Centre in Wellington NZ on the 7th of August 2004. Recorded the same evening as the Rick Jensen Trio release the excursionist. Jeff plays baritone sax. Jeff spends most of this performance in a continuous drone of overtone manipulation and investigation of the space he is in, with flurries of notes sneaking in later on. A subtle work that rewards listening.

Jeff Henderson is an integral part of the New Zealand improvised music scene. He is one of the true master saxophonists (and a dab hand at other instruments). Jeff has founded venues that cater for specialist, obscure, and avant-garde performance; firstly the Space, and when that closed, Happy. Jeff and his venues have been responsible for fostering Wellington underground music and bringing many amazing musicians into the country. Jeff has played with Marilyn Crispell, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, William Parker and other giants over the years. He is been a part of numerous groups in Wellington, including Stroma, the Melancholy Babes and the Ortiz Funeral Directors. He is currently performing with The Dodecahedrons and The Metabolists. Apparently the Dodecahedrons soon have a CD appearing. Jeff's work with with the Birchville Cat Motel deserves special mention. Jeff is also a fascinating solo improvisor, and I'm immensely pleased to present the first two Jeff Henderson solo albums for your listening. Rick Jensen: Tenor Sax/Alto Clarinet
Phil Somervell: Piano
Colin Somervell: Bass
Paul May: Drums/Percussion

Audio Files 320Kbps MP3
The Mosaicist 84 MB

Recorded live at The Vortex, London U.K. by Helen Petts 15/6/08
Thanks to John Russell for the gig and Helen for recording it.

The Rick Jensen Trio was started in 1999, We are an improvising group, all of our music is spontaneous, making every performance completely unique. Many different musicians have played with the band, some only once and others have stuck around for a couple of years. Originally formed in Wellington, New Zealand, we are now based London and there are various musicians who come and go from the group, the line-up can change with each performance. The group isn't always a trio but thats usually what it works out to be. We've experimented with all kinds of combinations and instrumentation, often dictated by who was around and able to perform. The group has been as large as 6 and as small as 2. We are essentially a live band and perform as often as possible. We have 17 releases most of which were released in limited edition CDRs which are no longer in print, currently available is "A Fundamental Problem" and "Shuddering Indifference" (available for free download from www.foetalorange.blogspot.com) "High Tension" a limited CDR and 4 older releases are still available for download from Postmoderncore records. Rick is also a member of I-C-E an improvising clarinet ensemble, Nova Scotia a free form abstract trio and founded The Radioactive Ensemble an international music/art collective. He also performs in other collaborative projects. He is a photographer and has had over 20 exhibitions in NZ and the U.K. and is currently working on publishing his first book.
